Anti-Sweating Treatment

For some people, sweating can become a persistent issue, affecting their daily lives and self-confidence. Axillary hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive underarm sweating and commonly effects both men and women. While sweating in response to heat, exercise, or stress is normal, individuals with axillary hyperhidrosis experience excessive sweating that is often unrelated to external triggers. Dr Harriet also has specialist experience in treating other areas of the body for sweating, such as scalp, face and hands.

Treatment with botulinum toxin is extremely effective in the under arms, reducing sweating by around 70-95%. The results start to kick in after around 48 hours with the full effect after one week. Most patients have treatment every 6 months, during which time the effects gradually wear off. There is no evidence that this treatment causes ‘rebound sweating’ in which other areas of the body starts to sweat more to compensate.

The Anxiety Connection

Anxiety and axillary hyperhidrosis often go hand in hand. Excessive underarm sweating can be a source of significant distress for individuals, leading to anxiety and reduced self-confidence. This anxiety can create a vicious cycle, as stress and emotional tension further exacerbate sweating. Patients experiencing excessive underarm sweating may avoid social situations, public speaking, or even handshakes, fearing embarrassment.

Are there other treatment options?

Dr Harriet’s patients have often tried several other treatments before trying botulinum toxin for excessive underarm sweating such as iontophoresis (electric current therapy), oral medications, prescription-strength antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride (such Driclor) or even surgery (thoracic sympathectomy). These treatments are often found to be ineffective or had significant side effects.

This treatment offers patients a safe and effective way to reduce sweating.
